Peltuinum with aperitif at sunset
Enjoy the fantastic sunset over the "open fields," with the yellow of wheat yielding to the red of the sun
Less than a 15-minute drive from Caporciano takes you to Peltuinum, the region’s ancient Roman capital, whose impressive remains, visited as early as the time of the Grand Tour, remain particularly fascinating because they are still immersed in unspoiled surroundings.
Park a short distance from the surviving section of the walls and enter through the remains of the old gate on the central axis of the city formed by the consular road Claudia Nova.
With a short walk you reach the remains of the temple and theater, which have been the subject of excavations. Worth visiting, with a short detour, is the rural church of St. Paul in Peltuinum, built with many reclaimed materials.
A visit in the late afternoon allows one to enjoy the fantastic sunset over the “open fields,” with the yellow of the wheat yielding to the red of the sun. At sunset, we recommend an aperitif sitting in one of the gazebos placed just outside the walls. We will be happy to provide you with what you need in a handy cooler bag.
For lovers of history and architecture, along the short road you can visit the village of Tussio and, immediately afterwards, Castel Camponeschi, a fortified hamlet abandoned in the 1950s and now the subject of a (second) recovery attempt with a PNRR project to make it a hospitality facility and cooking academy.
As an alternative to the short route by car, it is possible to get to Peltuinum by mountain bike, either via route (1), which is essentially flat, or via the more challenging route (2), which involves climbing to Bominaco, descending to Tussio, coasting to Castel Camponeschi before climbing to Peltuinum.
USEFUL INFO.
- By car: Duration: 2 hours, plus aperitif/picnic
- Extending to Tussio with a visit adds about 2 hours
- Comfortable trails with mostly compact bottom
- Some challenging MTB sections, steeper and breached, especially after heavy rains, in the trail from Bominaco to Tussio
- The base ring is marked with red paint and ribbons
