Celano and the Marsica
A hike that will take the whole day, for those who want to explore beyond the immediate area
You can get to Celano by crossing the scenic Delle Rocche plateau, which is very beautiful, but with villages, unlike those on the Gran Sasso, largely ruined by the illusory expansion of the 1970s and 1980s linked to ski tourism, with residences that are now often dilapidated but have ruined the beauty of the ancient villages. You see, I would recommend seeing the view and pulling straight up to Celano.
From Caporciano to this scenic route is about 1 hour and 15 hours by car (not unlike other options).
Celano is one of the main cities of Marsica and dominates the Fucino plain from above. Its territory is partly included in the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park.
In the highest part of the town is the Castle of Celano, which dominates the interior of the village from above, characterized by charming alleys that wind through old houses, churches and stately palaces and lead up to Colle San Flaviano where Piccolomini Castle is located. Walking through the streets of the village one can find several buildings that tell the story of this ancient and picturesque center of Abruzzo, while outside the town center there are numerous paths that lead to the discovery of the natural heritage.
Inside the castle now also houses the Marsica Museum of Sacred Art and the Torlonia Collection of Fucino Antiquities. The parish churches of St. John the Baptist, S.M. in Valleverde and Madonna della Grazie are also interesting.
Aielli-Celano Gorge
Very very very interesting, such as to deserve, if you are a fan, a dedicated and equipped excursion, the Aielli-Celano Gorges, known more simply as the “Celano Gorges,” which are located between the municipalities of Celano, Aielli and Ovindoli within the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park. Hollowed out for more than four kilometers by the Rio La Foce stream, the gorges have rock walls that can also have narrows of about 3 meters and at their highest points reach almost 200 meters in height. There are two types of trails within the gorges. The lower part is suitable for anyone who enjoys hiking, while the higher part is definitely reserved for canyoning experts.
In addition to the beautiful natural landscapes at the Celano Gorge, it is also possible to cross paths with various animal species, such as the griffon vulture, eagle owl, peregrine falcon, and even some wild boar.
In the area, depending on how much time you have, you can visit Aielli, the town of murals or, highly recommended, Alba Fucens, where a guided tour of the remains of the Roman city is recommended, or go as far as Rosciolo dei Marsi for the complex of S.M in valle Porclaneta, one of the many jewels of Abruzzo Romanesque architecture.
